SEPTEMBER 2025 CSA NEWSLETTER

This morning I woke to pea soup fog. It remained well into the morning, which according to the older-than-me farmers means we will have heavy precipitation ( rain or snow) in mid November. Have you heard all the reports of what our winter shall be? Winter, with a side of snow. Some may loathe this but if it helps, we ( animals and humans alike here) prefer the winter to be just that. Not only does it cleanse our soil of pesky parasites, it also keeps the cows clean on the snow and well insulated from wet, muddy conditions. For those that love the hibernating feeling, you can be excited with us.

Chickens are all in the freezer! Such a good feeling. We were watering them 4 and 5 times a day during the hottest weeks and did not lose ONE to heat. A rat did find a few in the early days but outside of that, we had an exemplary year. This means you will get to enjoy this for the months to come. The crew this year was such an eclectic one. Mostly Amish ladies, with a few friends who came, and new acquaintances we hope to see again. Thank you to Anna, Mary, Kati, Delila, Lizzie, Lina, Tiffany, Mei, Chloe, Shana, and Joy!

Question for you all - WhatsApp, Texting or None?

Many of you said YES! to this form of communication. Please let us know if you prefer for us NOT to use this so we can make note in your file.
For Emergency events like the Heat Delays, Winter Storms, or some other thing that would change the share schedule, we have considered Texting you to make sure you are getting the updates. What do you think? Would this be helpful? Any thoughts or suggestions?!

COMING SOON - TURKEYS FROM RUSTLING GRASS FARM

Our plan is to start taking names down for everyone who is interested in getting a turkey for fall. If you are considering a turkey for Thanksgiving  - let us know!

Share invoices come out on the 21st of every month and I will post this newsletter on our blog shortly after. I will also email you the link so you don’t miss the news. If the first shipping date doesn’t work for you, just let us know and we can arrange a later ship day.

We have coffee from Raquette River Roasters ( Organic, Free Trade and delicious!) in sample size 2 oz. or half pound bags. A Medium roast or Dark!  Honey from the MacCue family and Maple Syrup from the Huntley Farm are back in stock as well.

The heat held fast until just a few days ago and what a relief it has been. I watched the beef herd moving across the pasture yesterday and the mob of young calves raced from one side to the other. Tails held high, turning and play fighting with whoever was closest, their mothers nearby, tails swishing slowly at the fall fly and enjoying the comfort of easy living.

We are transitioning from the summer pace to fall prep. Hopefully this CSA Share distribution will be the last that we need to bring to Johnstown NY and drop at the UPS hub there. By doing that, it cuts an entire day of travel off and allows us to ship during the high heat of summer. With the temps dipping into the 40's overnight we can resume shipping from the ranch, and with that, we can be far more flexible for you on what week you can receive your share.

Please do let us know if you are interested in turkey! And, if you want to stock up on chicken, now is the time! We will hold some for your shares over the winter, but we can only carry so much in our freezer. If you have room for extras and love it, just ask so we can fill yours. Praying your August slips into September with the least amount of drama!

Cheers,
Kassandra
