February 2026 CSA Newsletter

I'm late in writing this. About 100 different things have happened between the official start of winter in late December and now. I made my annual 'slide off the road with a vehicle' early this year, no harm to the car or I. Not only did I get stuck, but also my tow truck driver, only to be rescued by a rapscallion Amish friend who showed up, pipe in mouth and a cheery "why hello, what is this I see?" as well as another friend who came out with his truck to pull us both out. I'm voting that after that I get to skip next year as well, what do you think?

In other, sadder news, we sent our dream bull Vincent off to the butchers. Vinny's exit was not unexpected as he was getting up in years, but no less sad for us. Having beaten a hoof injury two years ago and instead fathering an additional two more season of calves his footprint has been deeply felt. He LOVED getting scratches on his back, loading up in a trailer to 'go somewhere" ( he was a show animal before coming here and loved waltzing around for attention) and finding anyone who had treats for him. The cold weather was causing him pain, we figured the injury, though healed, left arthritis in the joint and he was finding getting up and down and moving around more and more difficult. He will be missed and remembered.

For those of you who have met me, perhaps you will agree with this picture captured by my husband? His nickname for me is "Minta", thus why the Tallow balm is named as such. He got it from a very old movie called The Farmers Wife They refer to me being a touch overzealous, also called an "over-packer" and my moment of getting the thrust necessary get the cuts into the box was captured here.
If you are interested in trying any of the Tallow Balm, especially now that the weather seems to dry our skin out SO quickly, just email us back and request one or more of the jars to be included in your next box. They are $8/each for CSA members only!
