July 2023 CSA Share Newsletter
Everything is verdant with some floral notes, add musky cow sweat as you scratch their sweet spot, the crisp smell of freshly raked grass-turned-hay, the fine grit you can never quite get rid of under your nails… and you have summer. We have hit the time of year where it is both beautiful and frazzled. Most of our summers have had me asking “why do we put ourselves through this” and I’m thankful that so far, despite losses, we are weathering the emotional toll of summer well. There may be easier ways of making a living, but not for us.
Meat chickens are always thrilling, from the first fluff balls appearance to the last chicken being placed in the freezer there is a gamut of adventure along the way. Is the feed you ordered what they will actually send you? Have you predator proofed the fencing well enough? Will the heavy rain with thunder ( which we are SO thankful for currently) panic the chicks and cause them to crush each other in the hysteria? Will a windstorm come along and blow their sheds over? Thousands of dollars are wrapped up in just this one animal endeavor and each one is precious to us.
Last week we raced the impending rain, equipment breakdowns, a muddy road and was able to cut, rake and bring out a huge pile of hay that will be used to feed the animals during the winter. The smell is just so, so good. Vinny enjoyed the very first bites and pronounced it delectable. As we move the main beef herd from pasture to pasture, the calves are popping up everywhere. My very favorite task is to move them to fresh grass.
Have you thought about visiting the ranch? We love having visitors and only ask to give us a heads up. If we can, we will take you on a tour – there are plenty of nooks and crannies of delightfulness. If you are considering it, let us know and we can send you info about places to stay and sights to see.
Every month your invoice will come out on the 21st and this newsletter will be posted on our blog. I will also email you the link so you don’t miss the news. If the first shipping date doesn’t work for you, just let us know and we can arrange a later ship day. Here is the upcoming schedule!

The zenith of the year has passed and while summer is in full force, we are all in preparation for the winter ahead. Hay being stored, strawberries picked and frozen, just sitting and soaking up the sunshine, all of it is so sweet. I’m so thankful to all of you who come here, who partake in this, both the highs and lows, and pray you are encouraged this month to soak it all up.
Cheers,
Kassandra
